Of Defeat Review Review By: Tiny "SoupTrain" Johnson |
Day of Defeat
There are an
abundance of World War 2 PC simulation
games out there but Day of Defeat takes the cake.
Being one of many mods (modifications) for Half Life, this game really
stands out. Most people think of
Counter-Strike when they hear Half Life mod, but I myself think of Day of
Defeat. When I had gotten sick of
Counter-Strike I had boogied on over to Day of Defeat.
I had heard about it and thought, “Hey, I’m a World War 2 buff,
I’ll give it the old college effort!” I
did exactly that and man, was I hooked!
First the axis…

Now you may be saying to yourself, “Why the heck would I want to be a NAZI?” Well, let me explain! The Axis not only have a very solid span of weapons, they also have some snazzy field uniforms! Don’t worry, joining the dark side during a Day of Defeat game is ok, you’re not REALLY a nazi! (If you are a real nazi, please do not contact me or the creator of this site, thank you).
Now let’s see what these boys play with!

Ahh, yes. The Karabiner 98, often referred to as the Kar. This weapon has a 5 round clip and impeccable accuracy. This weapon may be the most “whored” (read: used with talent) in the game. For long distance, you have great accuracy and a one shot kill, for close quarters this beast comes equipped with a bayonet that you can use to pop your enemies right in face.

This is the Karabiner 43, or Kar 43. This gun has the same accuracy as the Kar98 but actually has a faster rate of fire. This beauty is one of the newer weapons added to DoD during their new patch, 3.0.

This is the STG44. I call this the BIG BOY ON THE BLOCK due to it’s power and accuracy. This weapon works for close quarters and even for reasonable long distance!

Here is the MP40. This right here is a machine pistol. This has more rounds per clip than the STG44 but is a little less powerful yet…it STILL packs a punch!

Machine Guns you ask?! Here ya go! On the top is the MG42 and on the bottom is the MG34. The MG42 has a 250 round belt of ammunition but the downside is that it heats up fairly quickly rendering the gun useless for a couple of seconds. Now the MG34 has a 75 round drum and this weapon does not heat up at all.

This is the axis sniper rifle, it is a Kar98 with a scope on it, what else can I say?!

These are the Axis melee weapons. A shovel (spade) and a Knife. Both do massive damage!

*Drum Roll* Now the Allies!

The Garand! A beautiful rifle that has a faster rate of fire than the Kar98 but is less powerful. This weapon is great for poppin’ an axis in the head from a very long distance!

Browning Automatic Rifle, also known as the BAR. This gun is amazing. Not only can you run into a room and take out every guy in there, you can even snipe with it! That is how accurate it is! Within the new update of DoD, they have put some more recoil into it, but the BAR is one stinkin’ good weapon.

Allied Machine Gun?! You better believe it! This MG has a 200 round belt and does NOT heat up. You definitely do not what to meet up with this sucker in any location!

Each class has this (except the MG), the Ameriknife. A few shots with this and the enemy is done for!
Locations:

DoD_Dog1 is the map. This map was created to give you the effect of being thrown onto the beaches of Normandy, France during World War 2. The Axis have the upper hand and it is YOUR as the Allies job to push them back and take the land.

Para_Glider is the map. In this map, you are the Allies and your Glider plane carrying plenty of Parachuters crashed and you must destroy the Axis 88 Artillery guns. As Axis, you must protect your precious 88’s and destroy all Allies.

DoD_Caen2 is the map. This is an even map representing the city Caen in France. This map mixes close quarters battle with long distance fighting which makes this map one of the most popular and well known.
Graphics:
For a group of guys creating a modification for Half Life, they sure as hell did a donkey spankin’ job in this category. With every move you make you see more of the world around you in this First Person Shooter modification. The rush you get when you just killed a nazi scum with your Garand cannot be explained. The graphics pull you back to the early 1940’s and throw you into a world at war with no way out! Graphics get a 8 out of 10! (Why 8? The only problem are some bugs in the maps they have out.)
Realism:
Intensity grows the more you play this game. What causes this intensity? The incredible realism of DoD is what causes it! The only problems I had seen are the balance of the weapons. An example of this problem is when you get shot in the big toe with a Karabiner 98, you die instantly (due to poor hitboxes or making the Kar98 just too powerful? YOU be the judge) but when you use the Garand which should be of equal power and you shoot someone in the big toe, they only get wounded and not killed. I really had no beef with the realism at all, besides that weapon power event.
Summary:
All in all, this is an amazing game. It’s FREE too, can you believe it?! (Although you need to go get Half Life before you can get DoD). I rate this game a 9 out of 10. I have played it many many many times and it just does not get boring. This game is loved by so many that there is a radio station (DoDRadio) made for it as well as a large clan leagues, tournaments (BattleForEurope.com) and much more!. With the new maps coming out every day and the DoD team working hard to keep up the greatness of their game, this game is a winner! Tiny says go check that junk out!
