Battle Field 1942

The brand spankin’ new game Battle Field 1942 by Electronic Arts is almost out and it has already gotten an amazing response from people playing the demo.  Personally, I’ve only played the demo and I have already pre-ordered a copy.  Now on to the review…

In Battle Field 1942 you can literally be on any front of World War 2 as you desire.  You can be a Japanese, Soviet, Nazi, American (plus many more) soldiers.  In the demo you can choose between the Japanese and the American troops.

Not only can you choose through a large assortment of armies, there is also a vast artillery of vehicles and weapons.  For vehicles you can choose from halftracks to planes to carriers to jeeps to tanks.  Also for weapons you can choose from assault rifles to mines to grenades and much more.

Graphics:

The graphics are actually pretty darn good.  I’ve heard a few people make the statement that the game is kind of arcady.  At some points in the game I have to agree.  Especially when looking at another soldiers in the face.  The fact textures are hilarious.  Whether you are firing a weapon or just standing there your face makes the funniest expressions.  Even though I wasn’t in World War 2 walking around and looking at soldiers but I really doubt every soldier (including the enemy) carried the same facial expression nor looked like they were constipated 99.9% of the time.  Other than the soldier models, the rest of the models look very entertaining.

Controls:

The controls of BF1942 can either be your best friend or your worst night mare.  Coming new to the game it takes a while to get used to some of the controls.  The only difficulty I had playing BF1942 was handling a plane.  Sometimes it’s tricky to stay up in the air or even get off the ground for some people, fortunately I practiced somewhat and I dive bomb the hell out of people.

Problems:

Of course what Electronic Arts has out now is just a demo so you don’t expect it to be perfect but here are some problems I’ve heard and experienced myself.  For one, I’ve heard that Geforce is the only video card that supports BF1942.  The event that is happening is that when people try joining multiplayer games the screen goes black, flashes, then kicks them back to the desktop.  Also the server stability is off somewhat since I’ve seen plenty of server crashes.*

Summary:

There is no doubt in my mind that this game will go places and maybe kick around some WW2 games out of the way.  The scale of which this game is on is immense and amazing.  To be able to have a real full scale battle is nothing like you’ve ever experienced.  **To add to the goodness of this demo that is already out, EA is kind enough to send out a patch to for the multiplayer demo!  EA reports that in this patch they will repair bugs and server stability plus much more!  Once the patch is out this demo will be perfect.  Well back to the battle field! (hahaha get it?!)
